If you're going to try and check out the parade any time in the future, I recommend getting down there the night before and sleeping over. Then hit the street at 6:30am when they start to let people gather on the sidewalk, and set up a nice little spot for yourself.
We saw people with chairs, folding tables, and blankets - playing cards and having a grand old time, and totally secluded from the gathering masses on the sidewalk behind them. When we started to get crunched in and realized that I was suffocating a 5 year old boy with my rear end, we made the call to escape out to the park and watch the parade from there:
About half-way through the parade we tired of seeing the top of people's heads, and cut out early for lunch. We walked all the way down to 34th Street from 65th, which pretty much tired out MJ. It turned out to be a fun day, but I would still recommend either doing it right (staying over and getting a prime spot), or not doing it at all.
